Parsing The Top Five
They’re the five biggest markets in the nation so, not surprisingly, hold the five largest share of terrestrial broadband subscribers.  The cable guys dominate three of these top five DMAs, with shares ranging from a very strong 61 percent in the New York DMA to 51 percent in Chicago.

The telcos DSL services have majority shares in  two of the remaining top five, eking out a win over cable with a 46 percent share in Los Angeles and a 41 percent share in Dallas-Ft. Worth.

The surprising news, however, is how strongly the telco FTTx plays have moved forward.  By the end of the fourth quarter 2008, the Verizon FiOS/AT&T duo held a 10 percent or greater market share in four of the nation’s top five markets.•  (For more information see the May BRIDGE on broadband.)
